The biggest star in boxing today, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, is returning to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the second time this year to face off against Puerto Rico’s own, Edgar Berlanga. This fight is for Canelo’s WBC and WBO Super Middleweight titles and takes place this Saturday, September 14, at T-Mobile Arena.
Berlanga, 27, is a rising star in boxing and comes into this match-up with an undefeated record of 22-0 with 17 knockouts. Although he is originally from Puerto Rico, Berlanga resides in New York. Berlanga has a massive four-and-a-half-height advantage against Canelo.
This boxing pay-per-view event is stacked from top to bottom. Opening the broadcast, former title challenger Stephen Fulton will make his long-awaited return to the ring after being knocked out 14 months ago by Undisputed Super Bantamweight Champion Naoya Inoue.
The always entertaining “Rolly” Romero returns after six months to take on the 24-year-old Manuel Jaimes in a super lightweight bout. Romero was knocked out in March in his previous fight against Isaac Cruz. Romero is -250 to get the victory but Jaimes is a close +200 underdog.
After losing two of his previous three fights, the former IBF Super Middleweight champion Caleb Plant looks to get back on track against a dangerous undefeated Trevor McCumby. Both fighters have the same reach (74″), but Plant has a slight one-inch edge in height (6-foot-1 vs. 6-foot). Even though McCumby has 21 knockouts and is the more active fighter, he is still the huge underdog in this contest. Plant is -1400 while McCumby is +750 to pull off the upset.
In the co-main event, Philadelphia’s own Danny “Swift” Garica is fighting for the first time since July 2022, when he defeated Jose Benavidez Jr. Swift, 36, is a former WBC Welterweight champion and is moving up to middleweight for this matchup against Erislandy Lara (30-3-3).
Lara is the No. 4 ranked middleweight in the world, according to BoxRec. The southpaw Lara has knocked out all three of his previous opponents and hasn’t suffered a loss since 2018. Right now, Lara is the favorite at -235 to Garica’s +185 to get the victory.
Canelo is making the walk to the ring for the 66th time in his professional boxing career. According to BoxRec, Canelo is No. 5 on the pound-for-pound boxing list. He is only behind champions Naoya Inoue, Gervonta Davis, Terence Crawford, and Dmitrii Bivol, who has a victory over Canelo.
ESPN, The Ring Magazine, and BWAA (Boxing Writers Association of America) all have Canelo ranked No. 4 on their pound-for-pound lists. Canelo is currently a massive -1800 favorite while being -290 to win by way of knockout on DraftKings Sportsbook.
The odds may suggest this is an easy fight for Canelo, but that isn’t the case. Berlanga is a hungry and confident orthodox fighter who has knocked out 17 of his 22 opponents. Berlanga last fought earlier this year and finished Padraig McCrory in the sixth round.
Soon, we will find out if the lights are too bright for Berlanga. If Berlanga can shock the world and defeat Canelo, he would be the first person to upset the all-time great at his traditional weight class since 2013.
The prelims begin at 6 p.m. ET and can be streamed on the DraftKings Network. The main card is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET. on DAZN PPV or on Amazon Prime PPV.
