LSU Team Breakdown
The LSU Tigers played in primetime in Week 1 of the college football season and lost to USC. The LSU defense then struggled again against an FCS opponent last week. To make matters worse, starting DT Jacobian Guillory will miss the remainder of the season with an Achilles injury. This defense was one of the worst in the country last season, and despite some coaching changes on that side of the ball, it seems like it will be another rough season for the LSU defense.
Offensively, Garrett Nussmeier has stepped into the shoes of Heisman winner Jayden Daniels pretty well. Nussmeier is experienced in this offense and made some great throws in the first two games of the season. He doesn’t have the same magic as Daniels but is a solid pocket passer. Unfortunately, the weapons don’t compare to last year’s team that had two wide receivers go in the first round of the NFL Draft. That makes it easier for opposing defenses to force Nussmeier to make perfect throws with less separation by the receivers.
South Carolina Team Breakdown
South Carolina looked shaky in Week 1 and nearly lost to Old Dominion. However, they bounced back strong and got a dominant win over Kentucky on the road in their first SEC game of the season. The Gamecocks’ defense was fantastic against Kentucky, holding them to just 44 passing yards and six points. The defense even added a touchdown on a pick-six to seal the game in the third quarter.
On offense, it was a hard game to judge the Gamecocks. The defense was dominant and completely in control, so they had no real reason to be aggressive on offense. Redshirt freshman QB LaNorris Sellers certainly made some better throws and looked more comfortable than he did against Old Dominion. The Gamecocks hope that he will improve as the season goes on but for now, there still isn’t much of an aerial threat from this offense.
LSU vs. South Carolina Pick and Prediction
The matchups in this game are fascinating. LSU’s secondary can be exploited, but South Carolina doesn’t have much of a passing attack. LSU has a good passing offense, but its biggest strengths are the South Carolina pass rush and secondary. This game should come down to whether or not LSU can stop the run. If the Gamecocks can move the ball on the ground, which they want to do, they could control the tempo and win the game.
The South Carolina defense should be able to contain LSU’s offense, especially with a rowdy home crowd at their back. However, if the South Carolina rushing attack struggles and the offense can’t stay on the field, the South Carolina defense could get worn down. The ability to run the football and control the clock is the biggest key to this game, so there could be long possessions and limited explosive plays. Both defenses match up well with the opposing offense, so I expect this game to stay under the total.
