Ferguson suffered a knee injury in Sunday’s 33-17 win over the Browns and left the game early. An MRI on Monday revealed the tight end has suffered a sprained left MCL, per the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
After what appeared to be a serious injury, this diagnosis is a pleasant surprise for the Cowboys. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting Ferguson is considered week-to-week with the sprained MCL.
Before exiting the contest, the tight end caught three of his five targets for 15 yards. Last season, Ferguson didn’t miss a game and he finished ninth in DraftKings PPG among tight ends, thanks to 71 receptions for 761 yards and five touchdowns, all of which set career highs for the 25-year-old. Furthermore, Ferguson garnered a 16.9% target share and he led all tight ends with 23 redzone targets.
Ferguson leaves behind a large void in this pass-heavy Cowboys’ offense and with him sidelined, second-year player Luke Schoonmaker and rookie Brevyn Spann-Ford should handle all the work at tight end for Dallas. Both players logged 19 snaps in Sunday’s win over the Browns, but neither tight end drew a target. As a second-year player, Schoonmaker will likely see the slight edge in usage over Spann-Ford going forward.
Ferguson’s absence should also lead to more targets for both CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks, who led Dallas with 10 and seven targets Sunday, respectively. After dominating the Browns this past Sunday, the Cowboys host the Saints this Sunday and they are a seven-point favorite for this tilt on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
