Dan Le Batard and the Shipping Container spent time on Monday’s show breaking down the incident involving Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who Miami-Dade Police stopped on his way to Hard Rock Stadium, removed from his vehicle and placed facedown in handcuffs.
A video of Hill being detained by three officers surfaced online just hours before the game, sparking questions about why he was handcuffed and placed facedown on the pavement.
Dan points out that the only person who is going to be driving through that area at that time in an expensive car is a football player. It’s not a tailgater showing up three hours early, it’s a football player. Dan says these motorcycle cops are paid to protect that area around the stadium and to know something about what your surroundings are. He points out that arresting this particular person and then getting physical with him in an environment where everybody is going to tape it and share it before the cops could get back to their motorcycle has led to a situation where the officers were immediately placed on administrative leave.
To go a step further, Dan says where Hill got arrested is the SAFEST place for Hill to be in order to avoid arrest. There is no time and place in the universe where Dan thinks he could place Hill, except for on the actual field in the stadium, where he would be safer. Although Dan admits that the most likely to get arrested would be Hill based on general disorganization and messy malfeasance in every aspect of his life.
Mike points out that it was a perfect storm of coverage for ESPN, especially with Randy Moss on set to give the perspective of first-hand experience. Speaking of that coverage, ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington was standing right there when the incident when it happened and joined the show to discuss the scene. Darlington spoke with Hill on Sunday evening to find out why he was pulled over. Hill responded, “Speeding, reckless driving, or whatever.” Le Batard playfully responded, “I’m going with ‘whatever’ as the reason for Hill’s arrest.” Darlington also emphasized the need for a clear explanation, noting that handcuffing someone facedown near their workplace demands a solid justification. Hill’s teammates, defensive tackle Calais Campbell, a former Walter Payton Man of The Year, and tight end Jonnu Smith, also intervened during the incident, concerned about Hill’s well-being.
For what it’s worth, Hill did not seem phased by the pregame incident, going off for seven receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown in the game. In his post-game interview he declined to get into details about why he was pulled over and instead talked about the job he had to do and giving his thanks to his teammates for supporting him.
