Hours before the 2024 NFL season kicks off, the Cowboys finally reached an extension agreement with quarterback Dak Prescott.
The two sides agreed to a four-year extension worth $240 million. This makes Prescott the highest-paid player in NFL history per Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Cowboys Finally Lock Up Prescott
The Cowboys and Prescott have been attempting to reach a deal. If the two had not reached this extension, he would be entering the final season of his contract and set to play the 2024 season out before entering free agency. His cap figure still sits at an impressive $55.45 million.
When the contract takes full effect, Prescott will be the highest-paid quarterback and player in the NFL, with a $60 million annual mark. Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, and Trevor Lawrence each sit just behind him at $55 million annually.
With NFL salaries continuing to grow at extreme rates, this is another example of why organizations should think years ahead. Prescott will only hold the highest-paid title until the next franchise quarterback is up for his extension to reset the market.
Prescott has had a successful career thus far with the Cowboys. Since being selected in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Prescott has continually emerged as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He has served as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback for the past eight years, eclipsing 4,000 yards three times during this time and leading the NFL in touchdowns just last year. Whether or not he is the guy capable of bringing the Cowboys the success they desire is still to be determined, but the organization did not have a better option than to pay him the market rate for this extension.
This contract extension also comes just under two weeks since star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb signed his extension in Dallas. Lamb was holding out from training camp but ultimately got what he wanted and signed his four-year, $136 million deal to stay with the team.
The Cowboys can now put all their focus on the field as they enter week one of the NFL season. Dallas will be facing off against the Cleveland Browns on the road. Dallas enters as 2.5-point underdogs on DraftKings Sportsbook and +110 on the moneyline.
Despite the turbulent offseason, the Cowboys still have high hopes for this season. They hold +2000 odds to win the Super Bowl, which is 10th on DraftKings Sportsbook. Dallas also has the fourth-best odds to win the NFC at +1000 and is +210 to win the NFC East, trailing only the Philadelphia Eagles. Prescott also ranks ninth in MVP odds at +2000 on the season.
