Jeffrey Springs (elbow) placed on 15-day IL

Jeffrey Springs is being placed on the 15-day IL with left elbow fatigue. After recovering from Tommy John surgery, the pitcher just returned to the Rays’ rotation in July. He has been strong in his first seven starts of the season, with a 3.27 ERA.

Notably, in Springs’ most recent start this past Tuesday, the 31-year-old pitched a season-high six innings and struck out four batters and only allowed one run in a win vs. the Twins. Springs being placed on the IL with elbow discomfort isn’t encouraging, considering he had Tommy John surgery just over a year ago.

With Tampa Bay unlikely to make the playoffs and sitting fourth in the AL East, this is likely a precautionary move not to overwork Springs. It remains to be seen if we will see the pitcher again this season. As a corresponding move to Springs being placed on the IL, the Rays have recalled LHP Tyler Alexander from triple-A Durham.
