Just before the season gets underway on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers locked up Pat Freiermuth with a new deal that will keep him in town for four years for a total $48.4 million, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Freiermuth has been with the Steelers for three years since being drafted out of Penn State in the second round. The 25-year-old has scored a total of 11 touchdowns in his 44 games and has become a key pass catcher in the offense.
After dealing with a hamstring injury, he was limited 12 games last year and only had 308 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season. He did step up in the playoffs, though, finishing with five catches for 76 yards in the Steelers’ loss to the Bills.
This offseason, Freiermuth has seemingly gotten an upgrade at QB with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields now in Pittsburgh. Both QBs have relied on their tight ends heavily in the past, which could open the door for Freiermuth to step into fantasy relevance.
For Week 1, Wilson was named the starter as the Steelers head to Atlanta to face the Falcons as 3.5-point underdogs. Freiermuth is +250 to find the end zone, which he could do to help celebrate his new deal. The Falcons allowed just four tight end touchdowns last year, but gave up an average of over 65 yards to opposing TEs.
