UPDATE: After being listed as doubtful, Tee Higgins has officially been ruled out for Sunday’s season opener vs. the Patriots. Ja’Marr Chase ($7,800; illness/holdout), however, will play.
With Higgins missing, Chase should see elite usage when on the field, but the wideout is expected to be limited, as he has missed a majority of training camp while he and the Bengals discuss a new extension. Also, Andrei Iosivas ($3,000) should see an expanded role.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Chase and the Bengals are not expected to reach an agreement on a new deal before Sunday’s game vs. New England. – Alex Hunter
SEPTEMBER 6TH: Cincinnati Bengals WR Tee Higgins did not participate in Friday’s team walkthrough before their Week 1 game against the New England Patriots. On the latest injury report, Higgins was listed as doubtful for the Bengals first game. Higgins was limited at Thursday’s practice with a new hamstring injury, according to Paul Dehner, Jr. of The Athletic.
Despite suffering a hamstring injury and not practicing fully yesterday, Higgins told reporters, “I feel amazing.”
Higgins, 25, played out his original rookie contract, but signed a franchise tag for the 2024 season after not being able to agree on a long-term contract with the Bengals. He will make $21 million this season, which ranks 19th among the highest-paid WRs in the NFL.
Higgins is a former second-round draft pick, and, when healthy, has proved to be one of the best young WRs in the league. In 2023, he only played in 12 games, totaling 656 yards, 42 catches, and five catches. But in 2022—his last full season—Higgins caught 74 passes for 1,029 yards and seven touchdowns.
While his teammate, Ja’Marr Chase, has been holding out for a new contract this offseason, Higgins was expected to take on a larger role if Chase was to miss any games. But now, superstar QB Joe Burrow has his top two targets status in doubt for their Week 1 game.
We will have to wait and see if Higgins can try to play in Sunday’s opening game vs. the Patriots. The Bengals are eight-point favorites, while the game has an over/under of 41 points on DraftKings Sportsbook. Cincinnati is +130 to win the AFC North, +700 to win the AFC, and +1300 to win Super Bowl 59. – Ryan Wohl
