Gil has been sidelined since August 20 with a lower back strain and, after a successful rehab assignment, the pitcher has been reinstated off the 15-day IL. He is expected to get the start Friday vs. the Cubs.
Competing down in Double-A this past Sunday, Gil struck out six batters and allowed three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched. The 23-year-old threw 80 pitches in that rehab start, which is an encouraging sign that Gil likely won’t see any limitations in his return Friday.
After missing the entire 2023 season due to Tommy John surgery, Gil has had an excellent campaign as a starter for the Yankees this season, with a 12-6 record, a 3.39 ERA and 144 strikeouts in his 124 2/3 innings pitched. The Yankees have dropped 6 of their last 10 games and Gil’s return the rotation is huge news for the club, as they peruse the AL East title. Currently, New York is only a half a game behind the Orioles for the No. 1 seed in the AL East and, on the DraftKings Sportsbook, the Yankees carry -110 odds to win the division.
