During the offseason, the Tennessee Titans lost their superstar RB Derrick Henry to the Baltimore Ravens and needed a replacement for their backfield. The Titans signed former Dallas Cowboys RB Tony Pollard to a three-year contract for $24 million. But throughout the offseason, former third-round pick Tyjae Spears has looked impressive and has been taking touches away from Pollard.
As the Titans are preparing for their Week 1 matchup against the Bears in Chicago, their offensive coordinator Nick Holz told reporters Thursday afternoon, “we think it will be 50-50” when referring to how they are dividing the work in the backfield.
Pollard, 27, is the veteran of this young Titans’ RB room and joins the team with a lot of big-game experience. Pollard was a Pro Bowler in 2022 and is coming off his third straight season totaling over 1,000 total yards. Pollard had 1,316 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns while catching 55 passes last season. Although his first season as a No. 1 RB didn’t go fully as planned, he still had a productive campaign. Before the 2023 season, there were expectations for Pollard’s production to increase a ton while getting more work.
Spears was the backup to Henry a season ago, but was still a big part of Tennessee’s offense. He finished the season with 838 total yards, 55 catches and three touchdowns. Pollard and Spears have been viewed throughout training camp as 1A and 1B as neither player performs like a backup.
The Titans are currently +3.5 underdogs to the Bears while being +154 to win the game outright on DraftKings Sportsbook. The over/under in this game is set at 44.5 points. Pollard’s over/under for rushing yards is at 42.5 (-115) while Spears is set for 32.5 (-120). The over/under for catches with Spears in Week 1 is 2.5 (+100) while Pollard’s line is set at 1.5 (-165).
