Matt Chapman hit the free agent market this past offseason and did not get the money he was looking for. Fortunately for the former All-Star, it only took a few months longer than expected. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Chapman has agreed to a six-year, $151 million extension with San Francisco that will keep him in the Bay Area until 2030.
While that does seem like a lot of money to be handing out to a player who will turn 32-years-old next April, Chapman has quietly been putting together a very nice campaign with the Giants. The surface stats aren’t going to blow you away — Chapman has a .247 average and 22 home runs in his 579 plate appearances — but the underlying metrics are fantastic. Chapman is in the 98th percentile in bat speed (76.7), the 96th percentile in average exit velocity (93.3) and, as is his hallmark, the 93rd percentile in outs above average at third base. Chapman actually enters action on Thursday with a 4.5 fWAR — the 13th-highest mark among qualified position players.
Sadly, his personal success hasn’t translated into many wins for the Giants. San Francisco is four games below .500 and 16 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West. The club no longer even has odds to make the playoffs on the DraftKings Sportsbook. The Giants will need to add more this coming offseason if they want to compete.
