Week 2 brings us a terrific slate of college football games. You can check out my full best bets article on DK Network here, but below I’m going to breakdown one of the games of the week — Tennessee vs. North Carolina State. While this is considered a “neutral” field, the game is being played in Charlotte, NC. Should be a crowd in favor of the Wolfpack.
Tennessee vs. NC State +8 (-110)
1-unit (good to +7.5 or better)
Saturday (7:30pm ET)
The preseason lookahead number on this game opened at 4.5, and after a slow start to NC State’s season, paired with a terrific start for Tennessee, the spread has now nearly doubled. I’ll buy low on a Wolfpack team that I really believe in.
NC State was in a tight game in Week 1 for about three quarters, but finally pulled away from Western Carolina for a 38-21 victory. It was a clear lookahead spot for the Pack, who played last Thursday, giving them a bit of a rest advantage for this one. I expect Dave Doeren’s defense to be up to the challenge in this one, and play a much sharper game than they did in the opener.
NC State should have some good tape on Tennessee, as the Vols didn’t hold anything back on offense in their opener. They hung 69 points on Chattanooga, and the hyped Nico Iamaleava put on a show — 314 passing yards and three touchdowns in just half the game. Tennessee deserves to be favored, but this spread should’ve have moved north of a touchdown with this game being played in Carolina based off of one performance from each team.
The Vols were not tested on defense at all in their opener, and will now have to face Grayson McCall. The Coastal Carolina transfer has a lot to prove on the big stage, and looked good in his ACC debut, topping 300 yards in the air to go with three scores. At less than a touchdown I would leave this game alone. But I’m going to say this spread is too much of a Week 1 overreaction on both sides.
