Could a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie based on a recent popular comic run bring back one of the actors from the original 1990 film?
If the writer behind The Last Ronin comic miniseries has any say the answer could be Shell Yeah!
IDW’s The Last Ronin has become one of the most popular additions to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles canon of all-time. The story of one lone Turtle (NO SPOILERS!) left to avenge his brothers and father Master Splinter in a post-apocalyptic New York ruled with an iron fist by the Foot Clan has been a hit with TMNT fans young and old, which has led Paramount Pictures to put a live-action movie into development.
But could a potential Last Ronin movie see the return of the ORIGINAL April O’Neil from 1990’s first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie? Well, the writer behind The Last Ronin, Tom Waltz, told Screen Rant that he wants Judith Hoag to return as O’Neil in some form media tied to The Last Ronin.
Hoag, who was replaced by Paige Turco in 1991’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze and 1993’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, hadn’t had much to do with the franchise for a very long time. But, thanks to NECA’s outstanding line of movie-accurate 6-inch action figures, Hoag has been welcomed back into the franchise. And given the fact that we encounter an older April in The Last Ronin, it would make perfect sense for Hoag to once again grace the big screen in a TMNT movie adaption of the popular comic.
If movies like Deadpool & Wolverine and Spider-Man: No Way Home have taught us anything it is nostalgia sells for Millennials. And I think it would truly bring things full circle to see Hoag back in the role and should she return, knowledgeable TMNT audiences would go wild!
There has been no scheduled start date for shooting to begin on The Last Ronin movie, but if writer Tyler Burton Smith is listening, this long-time Turtles fan would love to go back to the future with the OG April O’Neil!
