Scottie Scheffler ($12,200; 141.5 FPTS) had one of the most dominant seasons on the PGA TOUR. It seems fitting that at the end of the playoffs, he hoisted the FedExCup Trophy by winning the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club.
Scheffler’s victory gives him seven PGA TOUR victories this year, including wins at THE PLAYERS Championship, the Masters and four other Signature events. He also won a gold medal at the Olympics, which isn’t an official PGA TOUR event.
He was way out in front in FedExCup points coming into the playoffs, and held the top spot coming into this week. This means he started with a two-stroke lead with the coming into the week. He was, of course, the heavy favorite. He delivered on his promise, though, with his first FedExCup title.
He started the week with a 65 to open up a comfortable lead, and was in command at the end of every round despite hitting a few bumps along the way. Even on Sunday, the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Rankings made things interesting with three bogeys in a four-hole stretch including this shot from a tree, and an ugly shank out of the bunker on she following hole. After he stumbled, his seven-shot lead shrunk to only two shots ahead of Collin Morikawa ($9,100; 129.5 FPTS).
Scheffler righted the ship, though, with three straight birdies on holes nine-through-11. He then dropped the hammer with an eagle on No. 14. In total, he finished his Final Round -4, with five birdies, three bogeys and that eagle.
He closed with this par on the final hole to claim a four-stroke victory. The victory brings his tournament earnings this season to an incredible $54.2 million.
Chasing Scottie while playing alongside him most of the week, Morikawa finished solo second. He finished four strokes back, while Sahith Theegala ($7,000; 136 FPTS) finished third. Adam Scott ($7,900; 115 FPTS), Xander Schauffele ($11,000; 96 FPTS) and Russell Henley ($7,400; 106 FPTS) tied for fourth.
In this week’s PGA TOUR $800K Summer Sand Trap, DraftKings gave DFS players a chance to turn a $25 entry fee into a $200K top prize. With such a limited field the top lineup was a duplicate turned in by five entries this entry from TooEasy27:
As you can see, this lineup had the top four exactly, along with Shane Lowry ($7,300; 94 FPTS) and Taylor Pendrith ($6,500; 107 FPTS) to round things out.
With the conclusion of the FedExCup Playoffs, the PGA TOUR heads into the Fall, but there isn’t really much of an offseason just yet. There’s just one week off before the FedExCup Fall fires up with the renamed Procore Championship from Silverado Resort in Napa, where Theegala got his breakthrough win last season.
