On Sunday, the Guardians made multiple roster moves, and those moves paid off with immediate results. With the rosters expanding on Sep. 1, the team added 1B Kyle Manzardo ($2,600; 30 FPTS) and activated Alex Cobb ($6,600; 28.3 FPTS) from the Injured List.
Manzardo hit only .207 (17-for-82) with no home runs and a .247 wOBA in his first 30 games in the majors. At Triple-A, he continued to put together a strong season with 20 homers and a .409 wOBA in 83 games. MLB Pipeline ranked him as the No. 51 prospect in baseball and the No. 3 prospect in the Guardians system.
He made a splash in his return on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a pair of solo home runs including his first MLB long ball in the highlight below.
Manzardo was a great leverage play on Sunday’s slate and only had 2.3% ownership in the $200K Bat Flip [$50K TO 1ST]. He reached 30 fantasy points by adding another homer in the sixth inning to complete his monster game. Jose Ramirez ($6,500; 19 FPTS) also went yard giving him 34 homers on the season. Earlier in the game, Andres Gimenez ($3,600; 14 FPTS) homered to get the scoring started against Mitch Keller ($8,300; 12.8 FPTS).
All that run support came behind Alex Cobb ($6,600; 28.3 FPTS) who was making just his third start of the season. He went 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in two starts in August before landing on the 15-day Injured List with a fractured fingernail. In his return on Sunday, it was the Pirates lineup that felt the pain as Cobb had six strikeouts in six innings while giving up just two hits. The only run the Pirates managed to score came on a throwing error in the seventh inning.
The win moves the Guardians to three games ahead of the Royals in the AL Central heading into a three-game series in Kansas City. Heading into that important series, the Guardians are -265 to win the AL Central and +500 to win the American League.
