New York Mets at Chicago White Sox

The Pick: Mets Run Line -1.5 (-125)

How long do revenge narratives run? Quintana left Chicago in 2020 and was shipped out of the Southside in 2016. The once future ace of the Second City has revitalized his career in the First City. The Mets have transformed a solid rotation into a great rotation by bringing back the sinkerball. The current era of hitters has been trained to follow high-velo pitches up in the zone. The Mets pound the bottom of the zone. This throws hitters for a loop. The White Sox don’t need to be tricked. They can’t hit — 24% K-Rate, .107 ISO, .272 wOBA and 73 wRC+ against left-handed pitching.

August has not been kind to Quintana, but he rebounded in his last start. He held the Padres scoreless and allowed four hits across 6.1 innings. He posted a 61.9% groundball rate and a 22.7% Hard Contact Rate. That’s the Mets’ plan. The plan should keep Chicago in check on Saturday night.

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds

The Pick: Brewers Moneyline (-122)

The Reds clubhouse loved Frankie Montas. Loved is the keyword. It’s past tense. The welcoming party will be the Reds’ Red Wedding. Montas is in for a rude awakening. Wrong! Montas can sleepwalk through this game. The Reds are done. They’ve lost seven of the last 10 games and have five wins in the last 16 games. The Brewers hung a 10 on the scoreboard in Cincinnati in the ninth inning Friday night. To be fair, The Reds’ backup catcher was pitching. It’s also fair to point out that the Reds’ backup catcher has made several appearances of late. He might as well be a part of their poor pitching staff.

Montas isn’t a star. He’s a dependable starter. His postseason role could be limited but he has a significant role over the next month. Montas needs to chew up innings and keep his team in games. The Reds might plate a few runs but they’ll likely concede more than they produce. Fernando Cruz will open for the Reds. He’s been decent across 55.2 innings of relief work (2.96 ERA). After Cruz, it’s the Reds’ struggling bullpen — 4.48 xFIP over the last two weeks (25th).

Miami Marlins at San Francisco Giants

The Pick: Marlins Moneyline (+122)

Walks and home runs are a problem. Miami’s former No. 1 Prospect (MLB No. 100 prospect) has regressed in his third full season. The 26-year-old is still piling up the strikeouts (10.3 K/9), but the walks (5.1 BB/9) and home runs (1.8 HR/9) are an issue. Cabrera also generates a good amount of ground balls (46.7%). He does a lot of things right, but he struggles to mitigate his mistakes (69.8% Strand Rate). Good teams take advantage of him. The Giants are not a good team — 23% K-Rate, .149 ISO, .298 wOBA and 93 wRC+ vs. right-handed pitching. They’re cold (29% K-Rate and 71 wRC+ over the last week). Last but not least, this game is in San Francisco’s pitcher’s paradise. Cabrera has been much better in spacious parks. His ERA is almost 3.5 runs lower in Miami’s pitcher’s park (4.17 ERA at home vs. 7.58 ERA on the road).
