For the first three months of the season, Austin Wells ($4,300; 32 FPTS) was batting towards the bottom of the lineup while slashing .214/.307/.343 with a .129 ISO. He then he started creeping up the lineup, batting seventh, then sixth, then finally slotting into the cleanup position.
July 20th was when he first batted cleanup in consecutive games. Since then, he’s slashed .311/.387/.491 with a .179 ISO in 124 plate appearances.
Wells has been bad againt left-handed pitching, batting .191 against them with 15 strikeouts in 56 plate appearances. Against right-handed pitching, though, he’s batting .265 with all 10 of his home runs.
On Friday, he was facing right-handed pitcher Eric Fedde ($7,700; 17 FPTS), who has allowed 12 of the 19 home runs to left-handed batters.
On the second pitch he saw in the third inning, Wells sent a Fedde pitch into the short porch in right field for a two-run homer.
He then added another two-run blast in the eighth inning to power the Yankees to the 6-3 win.
In the $200K Hidden Ball Trick tournament, Wells was rostered on 4.6% of teams.
On the mound for New York, Marcus Stroman ($7,200; 20.35 FPTS) went seven innings, struck out five, did not walk a batter and allowed two earned runs on nine hits.
The Cardinals scored two runs in the third inning on RBI singles by Brendan Donovan ($3,600; 5 FPTS) and Paul Goldschmidt ($4,000; 13 FPTS). Goldschmidt finished with three hits on the night.
In the eighth inning, Nolan Arenado ($3,900; 19 FPTS) sent a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for a solo shot.
