Netflix announced on Thursday that the highly anticipated documentary about former WWE owner and chairman Vince McMahon will be released on September 25. The documentary was announced in 2020 before McMahon retired and left WWE. It will consist of six episodes, all released on September 25.
Netflix stated in their announcement:
“‘Mr. McMahon’ chronicles the rise and fall of Vince McMahon, controversial businessman and co-founder of WWE. From his transformation of the WWE from a small, regional business into a global entertainment powerhouse to the explosive sexual misconduct allegations that led to his eventual resignation, this six-episode series offers a deep dive into McMahon’s life and his enduring franchise. Culled from over 200 hours of interviews with McMahon himself (prior to his resignation), his family members, business associates and some of the most iconic names in wrestling history, as well as the journalists who uncovered McMahon’s allegations — filmmaker Chris Smith (‘Tiger King’) and executive producer Bill Simmons (’30 for 30′) present an unflinching, no-holds-barred look at one of the most enigmatic figures in sports entertainment.”
McMahon, 79, was WWE’s owner, chairman, and CEO from 1982 until he retired in July 2022. This came after the WWE Board of Directors launched an investigation into allegations of McMahon’s payment to a former employee.
McMahon returned to WWE a few months later but resigned again in January 2024 after the alleged former employee, Janel Grant, issued a lawsuit against McMahon. The 67-page lawsuit contained vivid details of the disturbing allegations against McMahon. McMahon has continued to deny the allegations against Grant. On May 30, the Department of Justice launched an investigation into the allegations.
In 2023, WWE, UFC and Endeavor Group Holdings formed a new publicly traded company titled TKO Group Holdings Inc. Shortly after, McMahon sold $700 million worth of shares in TKO stock in November 2023 and later got rid of his final shares in the company, selling for another $400 million.
McMahon bought WWE (WWF then) from his father, Vincent J. McMahon, in 1982 for $1 million and played a massive part in leading the world’s most successful professional wrestling company. McMahon also participated in the ring as a wrestler throughout his career, winning the WWF Championship and the Royal Rumble match in 1999.
He was one of the greatest villains and bad guys in wrestling history. McMahon was last seen on WWE TV on June 27, 2022, when he appeared on Monday Night Raw to introduce John Cena.
