On August 17th, Freeman injured his finger after fielding a ground ball. Initial x-rays were negative but a later CT scan revealed a hairline fracture in his middle finger. Freeman played six games after suffering the injury but was held out for the entire series against the Baltimore Orioles.
Manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Thursday that Freeman would be back in the starting lineup for the start of the four-game series in Arizona on Friday. Los Angeles entered Thursday’s game 3.5 games on top of Arizona in the NL West with 29 games left in the season.
On the season, Freeman is slashing .284/.382/.475 with 17 home runs and six stolen bases. The walk rate is 12.2% while the strikeout rate is 15.8%. The ISO is .191. These are good numbers, but for Freeman, it’s the first time with a batting average under .300 since 2019.
Since the injury, Freeman has slashed .154/.214/.231 with a .077 ISO. It’s a small sample size of 28 plate appearances, but he’s obviously not 100 percent. That said, since he’s been cleared to play, a less-than-100-percent still provides a beneficial presence for the offense.
