WNBA Picks for August 28: Basketball Best Bets, Predictions, Odds on DraftKings Sportsbook

A loaded five-game WNBA slate on Wednesday features many betting options on DraftKings Sportsbook. Beginning with a contest between the Connecticut Sun and Indiana Fever, there is a lot of intriguing matchups to keep tabs on. Next up, the Washington Mystics and Chicago Sky will face off simultaneously with the New York Liberty taking on the Los Angeles Sparks. The slate ends with two matchups, including the Minnesota Lynx versus Phoenix Mercury, along with the Atlanta Dream squaring off against the Seattle Storm.

Let’s look below at my top bets for Wednesday’s WNBA betting card and an analysis based on recent trends and player strength.

Washington Mystics vs. Chicago Sky

Angel Reese Under 14.5 Rebounds (-110)

There is no denying Angel Reese’s impressive rebounding talent. Sure, an underwhelming shooting percentage in the paint relative to most frontcourt players does present additional offensive rebounding chances, but she’s still a dynamic rebounder on both the offensive and defensive glass. However, the Washington Mystics concede the second-fewest opponent offensive rebounds per game (7.6). Reese grabs 12.9 total rebounds per game, meaning she would need to exceed her season average by a 2.1 margin for the over to cash in.

If Washington doesn’t have a letdown performance in this department, taking the under seems like a good play here, given how lofty the expectations are for Reese. There is still genuine risk with this pick. Reese enters this game on a three-game streak pulling down at least 20 rebounds, so it’s possible she has another massive game in this department.

New York Liberty vs. Los Angeles Sparks

Sparks +13.5 (-112)

The Liberty are favored heavily to win this matchup, but the margin is so significant that it’s reasonable to believe the Sparks will manager to cover. Los Angeles lost plenty of games this season with Cameron Brink sidelined due to an ACL tear. Lately, with a five-out offense that is hard to guard led by Dearica Hamby and rookie Rickea Jackson, they have the ability to put up a lot of points and stay within a reasonable amount when trailing.

Los Angeles has fared well this season covering double-figure spread as underdogs against elite teams like the Connecticut Sun and Las Vegas Aces. This type of a spread tends to be put in danger even if a game is out of reach when a bad team puts up a respectable effort to close out the game and covers the spread despite still losing by double figures.

Minnesota Lynx vs. Phoenix Mercury

Lynx -4.5 (-108)

The Lynx enter Wednesday’s game on a six-game winning streak with some of the most impressive production in the WNBA. With a 113.2 offensive rating (1st) and a 98.1 defensive rating (4th), there is plenty to like about how this team is executing. The Mercury boast plenty of offensive firepower between the star trio of Kahleah Copper, Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi, but Minnesota’s elite defense has the necessary talent to set the tone.

Napheesa Collier is coming off a 31-point performance against the Fever and continues to play at an elite level. On a team with no shortage of perimeter shooting threats around her, Collier could lead this group to another victory to extend their winning streak while winning by at least five points to cash in this bet.

Atlanta Dream vs. Seattle Storm

Jewell Loyd Under 19.5 Points (-115)

The odds are the same when taking either the over or under for Jewell Loyd’s points prop against the Dream. Coming off a pair of underwhelming scoring performances against the Mystics, Loyd could be positioned to at least perform at a level similar to her recent 21-point performance against Atlanta on August 16. She’s averaging 20.1 points on the season, but only 17.5 points in two performances against Atlanta. In those outings, she shot only 30.3% from the floor and 16.7% from beyond the arc.

She might be due to have a stronger performance against this group on her home floor, but the Dream has produced like an elite defense lately, with a 96.7 defensive rating over the last five games — trailing only the Liberty and Sun. Seattle is continuing to integrate Gabby Williams into the fold, as well, potentially making it a bit more complicated for backcourt production in the short term.
