It’s the height of fantasy football draft season and Matthew Berry joined The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz on Wednesday to break it all down.
One of the key questions when building your draft strategy is when to take a quarterback. Our Sean Bernard shared some QB draft strategies already, but when is the right time to pick up a signal caller? When is too early? Berry answered the question from Stugotz by saying it all depends on your league format.
He did say, generally speaking, that he doesn’t want a quarterback before the fourth round, unless he’s in a SuperFlex league. Somewhere in that fourth to seventh round range feels like the sweet spot to Berry.
He also thinks it will be very important to pick up a mobile quarterback this season. Berry points out that since 2020 there have only been two quarterbacks in the NFL that have rushed for less than 240 yards and finished with a top-five fantasy quarterback ranking — Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. And those two legends had to throw for over 4,300 yards and 43 touchdowns to reach those heights without being a dual threat. Berry says there is just a much more narrow path to fantasy success if you only get points with your arm. Which is why you see these mobile quarterbacks going early and why if he doesn’t get one of those mobile quarterbacks, Berry would rather wait for a Jordan Love or a Jayden Daniels in the 9-to-11 range than just settle for a pure pocket passer like a C.J. Stroud or a Joe Burrow.
