For the second time in less than a week, a Reds starting pitcher has been scratched and put on the injured list just hours before game time. On Tuesday, it’s Nick Lodolo heading to the sidelines due to a strained middle finger. Jakob Junis will now start this evening’s contest against the Athletics (O/U 9.5; +124).
Cincinnati’s season is essentially over as August comes to a close, as the team sits five games below .500 and eight games back of a Wild Card spot. Still, it’s worth noting how unlucky the Reds’ rotation has been lately, with Lodolo joining Andrew Abbott and Hunter Greene on the IL. Nick Martinez is basically the last man standing in terms of names that were on the Opening Day roster.
Lodolo had not been pitching well in recent outings, possessing an inflated 9.75 ERA dating back to July 31. However, the left-hander did have some promising moments this season. All told, Lodolo’s thrown 115.1 innings and maintained a 3.78 xERA and a 3.95 FIP. The 26-year-old has also struck out 24.7% of the batter’s he’s faced. Regardless of if Lodolo returns in 2024, the former top prospect will be a name to watch in re-draft formats and DFS next year.
