Left hamstring tightness forced Ray to exit his start Sunday and, after further evaluation, the pitcher has been placed on the 15-day IL on Tuesday.
After recovering from Tommy John surgery, Ray has only made seven starts for the Giants this season, but the former Cy Young winner has been solid in his limited time, with a 3-2 record, a 4.70 ERA and 43 strikeouts in his 30 2/3 innings pitched. Losing Ray with only a month left in the regular season is a huge blow for a Giants club that is quickly losing hope for a playoff spot. Currently, San Francisco is 5.5 games back for the final Wild Card spot in the NL.
While hamstring injuries are tricky, Ray could still return before the end of the regular season. As a corresponding move, the Giants have re-called Landen Roupp from Triple-A. In his 23 innings pitched this season, Roupp has pitched to a 4.70 ERA and he has struck out 23 batters.
After this tough news for Ray, San Francisco is a +2000 underdog to the make the playoffs on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
