We’re entering the homestretch of the MLB regular season and while it might seem like most of the playoff spots are wrapped up, there’s still a couple huge games on Tuesday night. Likely none bigger than the battle between the Diamondbacks and the Mets in Arizona.
With that being said, in DFS, all the games matter. Every pitcher and every hitter. So let’s dive in and break down this whole slate.

PITCHER

Logan Gilbert, Seattle Mariners vs. Tampa Bay Rays, $9,400 – Gilbert was roughed up in his last outing, but I don’t see that happening again on Tuesday. First and foremost, he isn’t facing the Dodgers again. Secondly, the right-hander has been masterful when toeing the rubber in Seattle this season. In 78.1 innings at home, Gilbert owns a 2.53 ERA and a 2.94 FIP with a 27.7% strikeout rate. As for the matchup, the Rays have struggled to score runs since trading away key pieces at the deadline. In August, Tampa combines the league’s third-lowest wRC+ (81) with its fifth-highest strikeout rate (26.4%). That’s tantalizing for prospective owners.

Andrew Heaney, Texas Rangers at Chicago White Sox, $7,000 – The Andrew Heaney experience is never without some bumps, but at the end of the day, he’s a pitcher striking out over a batter per inning this season and he’s $7K against the White Sox. Let’s not overcomplicate things. He’s clearly viable. Heaney is also on the heels of a very nice start versus the Pirates, where the veteran tossed five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Since August 1, Chicago ranks dead-last in MLB in both ISO (.115) and wRC+ (81).
INFIELD

Ryan McMahon, Colorado Rockies vs. Miami Marlins, $4,900 – This is odd to say about an asset that nearly $5K, but McMahon feels a little cheap on this slate. The infielder has been slumping since the All-Star break, yet in a matchup with Roddery Munoz ($5,800) at Coors Field, I’d have been willing to pay more for the LHB’s services. Munoz has been destroyed by left-handed opponents so far in 2024. In fact, lefties are hitting 3.65 home runs per nine off the RHP. Woof.

Marcus Semien, Texas Rangers at Chicago White Sox, $4,800 – There’s a couple things to think about when it comes to Semien’s viability. At first blush, this seems like a subpar matchup with Garrett Crochet ($8,000), but the lefty hasn’t thrown more than 60 pitches in either of his last two starts. Plus, Semien possesses a 141 wRC+ against LHPs in 2024, anyway. When Crochet inevitably exits early, that’ll leave several innings for the White Sox’s bullpen to cover — a bullpen that ranks dead-last in the AL in ERA (5.05). Semien could be looking at three PAs off relievers tonight.

Drew Romo, Colorado Rockies vs. Miami Marlins, $3,100 – If you’re stacking Rockies on this slate, they don’t come less expensive than Romo. The switch-hitting backstop hasn’t done much in his first taste of the majors, but he’s another left-handed bat to throw at the aforementioned Munoz, who is surrendering a whopping .440 wOBA within the split this season. At the very least, Romo hit RHPs well at Triple-A, managing a .298 average and a .820 OPS. There’s some upside here. Especially at Coors.
OUTFIELD

Jarren Duran, Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays, $5,900 – Durran is red-hot at the moment. Not only did the All-Star go deep in both games of Monday’s faux-doubleheader, but Durran is slashing .319/.385/.638 with a .318 ISO and a 178 wRC+ since appearing in the Midsummer Classic. He’ll draw an opposite-hand matchup with Yariel Rodriguez ($6,800) on Tuesday, who has conceded nine earned runs in his last 9.1 innings of work. Durran will also surely get a few at-bats off a tired Blue Jays bullpen that is surrendering an MLB-high 1.55 opponent home runs per nine.

Teoscar Hernandez, Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Baltimore Orioles, $5,000 – As crazy as it is to say, no one in the Dodgers’ lineup has more upside than Hernandez in a matchup with a southpaw. In his 135 plate appearances within the split this season, the veteran outfielder owns a .298 ISO and a team-high 153 wRC+. Cole Irvin ($6,600) isn’t just any lefty, either. Irvin has allowed opposing RHBs to slash .316/.364/.552 with a 1.72 home runs per nine in 2024. Hernandez should be licking his chops.

Addison Barger, Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox, $2,600 – Barger is far from a perfect player, but he packs more upside than most assets priced this close to the minimum. The rookie has been putting up some impressive stats and exit velocities since August 17, with five extra-base knocks, a .306 ISO and a 128 wRC+ within that span of time. He’s certainly work a look if you’re needing to save salary.
