From 2018 to 2021, Jose Berrios ($8,000; 24.45 FPTS) was one of the better pitchers in baseball. He wasn’t dominant, as the K/9 never got into the double digits, but he pitched at least 190 innings in three of those seasons, had decent control, limited the long ball and posted a sub-4 FIP three times.
Then the strikeouts plummeted and batters started teeing off on his fastball. The K/9 went under 8.0 while the FIP spiked to 4.55. Berrios bounced back a bit in 2023, but things have reverted to a 7.07 K/9 and 4.97 FIP this season.
Here’s the thing, though.
There have been some awful starts, like the eight earned runs allowed in 3.2 innings back in May against the Philadelphia Phillies. There have been four other starts with five earned runs allowed, but Berrios has allowed three or fewer runs in 19 other starts. Of those 19, 15 have been quality starts, with three in the most recent outings.
On Monday in Boston, he notched his fourth straight quality start. Berrios went 7.2 innings, struck out six, did not walk a batter and allowed two earned runs on eight hits.
The lone blemish was a two-run home run by Jarren Duran ($5,900; 28 FPTS). Duran also had a single, three RBI and walked once.
For Toronto, George Springer ($4,700; 23 FPTS) led the way, finishing 2-for-4 with a three-run homer. He also had a walk.
Toronto finished with seven runs on nine hits while Boston had three runs, nine hits and four errors.
