Initially scheduled to start Friday’s contest against the Pirates, Andrew Abbott has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left shoulder strain. Alan Busenitz was called up from Triple-A to fill Abbott’s roster spot, while Buck Farmer will now open versus Pittsburgh.
Abbott is in the midst of a solid season for the Reds, though one that could be considered quite lucky. The left-hander has managed to maintain a 3.72 ERA across 25 starts and 138.0 innings, but his 5.04 FIP tells a much different story. One where Abbott’s minuscule .260 BABIP and inflated 82.9% strand rate have allowed the 25-year-old to overcome surrendering 1.63 opponent home runs per nine. Add in a modest 19.5% strikeout rate and it’s hard to imagine anyone will have much DFS interest in Abbott if he is able to return in 2024.
Specific to tonight’s action, Cincinnati is a slight underdog to Pittsburgh on the DraftKings Sportsbook. Even with Abbott’s absence, it’s worth noting that the Pirates have dropped 11 of their last 10 games against NL opponents.
