The Nationals have fallen well out of the playoff race, but there are still plenty of reasons to have some positive Natitude based on what we’ve seen from their young players this season. The latest prospect to join the team will be OF Dylan Crews, who is expected to make his debut Monday, per MLB Network’s Grant Paulson:
Crews was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft behind his LSU teammate Paul Skenes – you might’ve heard of him. The 22-year-old righty was ranked as the No. 3 prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline and the No. 4 prospect in baseball by Baseball America.
He has split time between the Double-A Harrisburg Senators and the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings. Crews hit .274 with five home runs, 15 stolen bases, and a .355 wOBA in 51 games for Harrisburg. He then hit .271 with eight homers, 10 stolen bases and a .356 wOBA for Rochester. The prospect has been heating up lately, hitting .333 (20-for-60) over his last 14 games with four home runs, a .428 wOBA, and his first multi-stolen base game of the season:
Crews is a key part of the Nationals outfield of the future alongside James Wood and Robert Hassell III, who is still in the minors.
The plan is for Crews to DH on Friday night and then join the Nats in Washington for his Monday night debut. Washington will be opening a three-game set against the Yankees and former Nats super star Juan Soto. While Soto’s return will definitely be an attraction for fans, getting a chance to see their new young talent will be exciting for Nats fans as well.
Crews is an early sleeper consideration for Rookie of the Year in 2025 if he stays under the rookie minimum this year. In the race for the award this year, Paul Skenes (-130) remains the favorite with Jackson Merrill surging behind him and Crews’ teammate James Wood on the board as a +20000 long shot.
