After losing five straight and seven of eight games, the playoff prospects for the St. Louis Cardinals looked grim. Granted, after winning two straight, they were still 10.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central lead, so that path doesn’t seem viable. They still have an outside shot at a Wild Card slot, though, being five game back of the Atlanta Braves with 36 games to go.
All the Cardinals can do is continue to win and hope the Braves lose some games. On Friday, they took care of business once again for their third win a row, besting the Minnesota Twins 6-1.
Masyn Winn ($4,200; 10 FPTS) and Lars Nootbaar ($3,300; 14 FPTS) both had two hits and drove in two runs, but the night beloned to Willson Contreras ($5,000; 23 FPTS) and Brendan Donovan ($3,800; 25 FPTS).
Contreras went 3-for-5 with a double and two stolen bases. The catcher entered Friday’s contest with 31 career stolen bases, with three of those coming this season.
Donovan only had one hit, but it was of the long ball variety. He also scored twice, had two walks and stole a base.
On the mound for St. Louis, Andre Pallante ($7,300; 23.55 FPTS) was great, striking out five in seven innings while walking two and only allowing one earned run on five hits. He threw 99 pitches.
This was Pallante’s 14th start this season. In the prior 13 starts, the K/9 was only 6.78 and he walked 31 batters in 79.2 innings, but only allowed six home runs and posted a 3.88 FIP.
