The Mariners have parted ways with manager Scott Servais on Thursday. Dan Wilson will be the interim manager. Seattle does not play this evening, but it will start a series with the Giants on Friday.
Servais has been one of MLB’s longest tenured managers. 2024 marked Servais’ ninth in Seattle, where he has accumulated a record of 680-642. He was at the helm when the Mariners broke their 21-year postseason drought in 2022 and when the team missed the playoffs by a single game in 2023.
This is yet another twist in what has been a rollercoaster campaign for the Mariners, who at one point held a 10-game lead in the American League West. Now, entering play on Thursday, Seattle sits five games back of the Houston Astros for the division and 7.5 games back in the Wild Card. It’s a disappointing place to be for a team that currently leads baseball in starting pitching ERA (3.32) and was quite aggressive at the trade deadline, bringing in the likes of Randy Arozarena, Justin Turner and Yimi Garcia.
The big issue for the Mariners has been run production. Seattle is hitting a league-worst .206 since the All-Star break and, for the season as a whole, it owns the highest strikeout rate in MLB (27.7%). It’s unlikely the aforementioned Wilson can do much to change these woes, which is why the Mariners have fallen to +550 on the DraftKings Sportsbook to win the AL West.
