Boise State has been a staple in the Mountain West Title Game in recent seasons, and the Broncos are -215 to be back in the game this season on DraftKings Sportsbook. With a more favorable schedule this season, I’m going to be backing Boise to come out of their conference, which could give them a shot at making the College Football Playoff.
Mountain West Championship Winner: Boise State (-120) — 1-unit
The 2023 season could have been really ugly for Boise. They started just 4-5, were alternating quarterbacks, fired the coach, and had to face the other top-five teams in the conference. The Broncos still managed to find their way to the MW Championship game and win it by 24 points on the road at UNLV.
Spencer Danielson took over as Head Coach last season, and will start the 2024 season as HC for the first time. It’s a strange schedule, with a very tough road test at Oregon in Week 2, and home games against former PAC-12 squads in Washington State and Oregon State — but those are not MW teams in 2024.
Boise has seven true conference games, but avoids Air Force and Fresno State in regular season play. The schedule is very manageable, with the toughest spot being a road game at UNLV, where revenge will be on the Rebels’ mind. Surprisingly, Malachi Nelson did not win the starting QB job — a talented freshman transfer from USC. But Maddux Madsen played well for this team last year, and the offense should be on the up. Maybe Nelson wins the job as the season goes on, but either QB will have plenty of offensive weapons to work with.
The defense should be rock solid for the Broncos, with tons of experience and 11 returning starters. Look for Boise to capitalize on this schedule and play in the MW Title game, as it has in six of the last seven seasons. And once they do get there, this is the best team in the conference, and should be a decent sized favorite over anybody else in the conference.
