The 1899 Cleveland Spiders won only 20 games. That record will likely never be broken. The Philadelphia Athletics, though, won only 36 games in both the 1916 and 1919 seasons. The 2024 Chicago White Sox had 30 wins with 35 games left in the season entering Wednesday’s game in San Francisco.
Those who took the under on 36 wins for the White Sox have a bead of sweat running down the forehead because the White Sox notched win number 31.
On the mound for Chicago, Garrett Crochet ($8,000; 10 FPTS) only went four innings but he struck out four, walked one, and allowed only two earned runs on four hits. In the $100K Relay Throw tournament, Crochet was rostered on 21.92% of teams, the fourth-highest mark. The White Sox bullpen, which has the third-highest FIP, did not allow an earned run the rest of the way.
Logan Webb ($8,500; 23 FPTS) matched Crochet by allowing two earned runs on five hits. He did not walk a batter, struck out six and went eight innings. Unfortunately, the Giants bullpen, one of the better units in the MLB, allowed four earned runs in the ninth so that the White Sox could notch their 31st win on the season with the 6-2 victory. Chicago was +196 on the moneyline.
For offense, Korey Lee ($2,300; 9 FPTS) and Lenyn Sosa ($2,400; 7 FPTS) each had only one hit, but both drove in two runs in the top of the ninth.
The big fantasy day belonged to Luis Robert Jr. ($4,200; 24 FPTS). While he didn’t drive in any runs, he had a double, a single, scored twice, walked, and stole two bases. In the $100K Relay Throw tournament, only 8.77% of teams rostered Robert Jr.
