Despite being amid one of their best stretches in recent months, the Cincinnati Reds’ hopes at clinching an NL Wild Card have taken a significant blow. Franchise ace Hunter Greene was placed on the IL Saturday evening with right elbow soreness stemming from his sensational outing Tuesday against division foe St.Louis Cardinals.
President of Baseball Operations, Nick Krall, said this was a precautionary move, and a subsequent MRI would give the organization more clarity on how to proceed.
The player taking Greene’s spot on the roster has yet to be announced.
The 25-year-old was in the midst of a breakout campaign, which saw him make his first All-Star game and establish himself as a viable Cy Young contender. The righty has a dazzling 2.83 ERA while recording 162 punchouts and amassing a 9-4 record on the season.
Any chance of the Reds miraculously catching the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central has seemingly evaporated, and they are +6500 to win the division.
