According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Lions avoided a major scare with running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
Gibbs suffered the hamstring injury in practice on Tuesday, but head coach Dan Campbell also seemed to think the injury would not be a major issue. After practice, he answered a question from 97.1 The Ticket about Gibbs by saying: “I think we’re gonna be fine here. So, I think we’ll be good.”
Gibbs is coming off a strong rookie season after the Lions took him with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He played 15 regular games and totaled 1,261 scrimmage yards while scoring 11 touchdowns and hauling in 51-of-71 targets. In the postseason, he ran for three more touchdowns and had 13 catches while totaling 238 yards from scrimmage in three games.
While we may not see much or any of Gibbs this preseason, the good news is he should be good to go in Week 1. Even if he’s limited early in the year, this shouldn’t be a major issue for him going forward this season.
Right now, Gibbs is going off the board as the No. 4 RB in Best Ball contests on DraftKings with an ADP of 12.9. The injury could cause his stock to slide a little bit, but that couls also make him a better value if he’s able to stay healthy. David Montgomery is also still in the mix for the Lions and would likely get more work, while Zonovan Knight would step in if Gibbs is sidelined.
In Week 1, Gibbs and the Lions open on Sunday Night Football against the Rams. The Lions are currently -3.5 in that Week 1 matchup which has an over/under of 51 points.
The Lions have the fourth-shortest odds to win the Super Bowl this season at +1200 and are -245 to make the playoffs. In the in the Lions Team Special Market, Gibbs to Have 1000+ Rushing Yards and 500+ Receiving Yards is at +450 and Gibbs to Score 10+ Rushing TDs and 5+ Receiving TDs in the Regular Season at +1800. If you’re skittish about backing Gibbs specifically, you could go with the Lions to score 1+ Rushing TD in Every Regular Season Game (17 Games) at +2500.
