The 2024 Paris Olympics have come to an end, and the United States came out big winners. The U.S. finished with the most overall medals (126) and tied China for the most gold medals (40). Japan finished with the third-most gold medals, yet they only had half as many gold medals as the U.S. and China.
Looking at some of the numbers on DraftKings Sportsbook from the Olympics, bettors weren’t exactly surprised by how well the U.S. performed.
U.S. Men’s Basketball was the most bet on team in all of the Olympics on DraftKings Sportsbook, both by handle and number of bets. U.S. Women’s Basketball was second in handle, but third in total bets, with U.S. Women’s Soccer having the inverse results.
Finishing out the top five in the same spot by both handle and numbers of bets were France Men’s Basketball at fourth and Canada Men’s Basketball rounding out the group.
Standout athletes
LeBron James and Stephen Curry were the No. 1 and 2 most bet on players by handle and number of bets, respectively. Nikola Jokic rounded out the third spot in the handle rankings, while Kevin Durant was third in number of bets.
Big events
Speaking of Jokic, the game in which he and his Serbian teammates nearly upset the United States was the most bet on Olympic event by handle. The most bet on game by number of bets, however, was the Men’s Basketball gold medal game. In fact, France vs. U.S. Men’s Basketball is the most bet on Olympic event of all time on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Overall results
The output from both of those basketball contests played a big role in the growth since the last summer Olympics. There were 7.7x more bets made on DraftKings Sportsbook on women’s sports in 2024 than 2020, as well as 4.5x more handle. Men’s sports had even more growth on DraftKings Sportsbook, seeing 10x more bets and 6.1x more handle.
Overall, the 2024 Paris Olympics saw 3.7x more handle and 5.1x more bets than the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on DraftKings Sportsbook.
