Hunter Greene enters Thursday fourth in the NL Cy Young odds (+1500) with an uphill battle ahead, given the play of Chris Sale (+120) and Paul Skenes (+200). But, all the Reds right-hander can do right now is continue to put in quality work if he hopes to pull off an upset.
He’ll be opposite Kyle Tyler. The Miami right-hander had been having a serviceable season, but he just got roughed up in his last outing vs. Atlanta. Cincinnati could give him some problems, as well.
Before getting into the lineups they’re facing, here’s a look at the some of the monthly numbers Greene and Tyler have put up via their individual player pages in the DraftKings Sportsbook Stats Hub:
A matchup with Miami is a nice way for Green to boost some of his stats. Their season-long strikeout rate against righties is just 23.3%, but that’s bloated a bit recently. Last month, the Marlins posted a 25.2% K rate against righties. To open up August, they’re up to 27.8%. They’re in prime form for Greene to go over 7.5 strikeouts (+115).
As for Tyler, taking the under on his 14.5 outs recorded line (+115) is interesting. He’s only gone over that number once. The Reds posted a .246 ISO and .342 wOBA in July against right-handed pitching. To open August, they have a .221 ISO and .364 wOBA against righties. Should make for another tough matchup for Tyler.
As for the individual numbers of the hitters in this game, here’s a look at how some of them have performed over their last five games against their hits line for Thursday’s matchup via the Consistency Sheets in the DraftKings Sportsbook Stats Hub:
After an explosive start to this series, Elly De La Cruz went 0-for-4 with a walk and three strikeouts on Wednesday. A rough day, but nothing more. The shortstop still enters Thursday with a .281 ISO and .398 wOBA against right-handed pitching. With his total bases line at +125, and Tyler being far from a challenging matchup, this feels like a prime time to back the 2024 All-Star.
Left-handed bats have particularly given Tyler a tough time, so TJ Friedl is another interesting option. He’s off to a slower start against righties this month. But, the Reds’ cleanup hitter still has a season-long .177 ISO against right-handed pitching. He’s +155 to log 2+ total bases and -115 to go over 1.5 hits+runs+RBI.
