Tyler O’Neill is an intoxicating player. Despite being listed at 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds, he looks like a Michelangelo-carved marble statue of a horse carrying Alexander the Great. Back in 2021, he hit 34 home runs with 15 steals in only 537 plate appearances.
And therein lies the rub.
Those 537 plate appearances in 138 games were a career high. He’s never played more than 96 games in any other season or accrued above 390 plate appearances. He’s missed games due to hamstring, wrist, groin, finger, back, shoulder, allergies, leg, neck, knee, foot and head injuries.
So far this season, O’Neill has played in 80 games with 342 plate appearances. He’s been awesome with 22 home runs, three stolen bases, an 11.1% walk rate, .275 ISO and .268/.357/.544 slash. The strikeout rate is 31.9%, but that’s the O’Neill experience.
He has missed the last four games, though, due to a stomach virus and infection in the calf. Alex Cora said that O’Neill would be available off the bench for Monday’s game and that expectations were a return to the lineup on Wednesday. Instead, the Red Sox placed O’Neill on the IL. There’s been no mention as of yet if it will be retroactive to a certain date.
