After he had to be scratched from Tuesday’s start against the Blue Jays, Rodriguez will land on the 15-day injured list with what the team called “right lat/teres discomfort.” They made the move retroactive to Sunday, so he could miss just a couple starts, although that does seem very optimistic.
Rodriguez missed substantial time in 2022 with Triple-A Norfolk with a similar injury that cost him three months. He also spent a couple weeks on the injured list in May with right shoulder inflammation.
When he has been healthy, Rodriguez has been very solid, going 13-4 with a 3.86 ERA, 3.67 FIP and 10.03 K/9. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of his last seven outings and had gone 5-1 during that stretch.
While he’s out, the Orioles will have to rely on trade deadline acquisitions Zach Eflin and Trevor Rogers to make more of an impact in their rotation behind ace Corbin Burnes. Since lat injuries can result in a wide variety of outcomes, Rodriguez could be out just a few weeks or a few months depending on the severity of the issue.
With the Orioles looking to make a playoff run, Rodriguez’s availability for the postseason will be a key storyline to track. Right now, the O’s are -4000 to make the playoffs, +170 to win the AL East and +800 to win the World Series. Those championship odds are the fourth-shortest of any MLB team behind just the Dodgers, Yankees and Phillies.
