The PGA TOUR heads to North Carolina this week for the final event of the regular season. Sedgefield Country Club will host the Wyndham Championship, and measures as a 7,139-yard par 70 with Bermuda greens.
This will be the final cut event of the season as well, as each of the FedEx Cup Playoff events will feature no cut. The field this week will be headlined by Sungjae Im, but plenty of other PGA TOUR regulars will be in attendance, such as Shane Lowry, Cam Young and last year’s winner Lucas Glover.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
Aaron Rai to win (+3000)
Rai is having an incredible 2024 season and his rolling numbers jump off the page. Over the past 48 rounds in this field, the Englishman ranks No. 1 in Total Strokes Gained, second in SG: Tee-to-Green and third in SG: Ball-Striking. In addition, he sits second in driving accuracy and fourth in GIR%.
He’s coming off a missed cut at The Open Championship, but prior to that had finished T7 or better in three straight starts, including a runner-up finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Overall, Rai has five top-10s on the year, and has really shown a weekly ceiling that has been lacking in years past.
His course history at Sedgefield is nothing special, but Rai is a different golfer now, and should absolutely thrive this week at a track that minimizes driving distance and demands both driving accuracy and short-iron play. In a weak field at an event that’s produced some wacky winners in the past, this is as good a spot as any for Rai to claim his maiden PGA TOUR victory, and 30/1 is a really nice price for him.
Denny McCarthy to win (+7000)
Speaking of guys who have yet to win on the PGA TOUR, enter McCarthy, who has been knocking on the door for a while now. He almost took down Viktor Hovland to win the Memorial last year, and then came ever so close again this season at the Valero Texas Open, where one poor iron-shot on the first playoff hole sunk his chances and gave the title to Akshay Bhatia.
The fact remains that McCarthy has shown he has what it takes to win, and if that day ever comes it most likely will be at an event like the Wyndham, which can turn into a putting contest. McCarthy has been accurate enough this year, and if he plays out of the fairway this week he will absolutely be in contention come Sunday. So far in six trips to Sedgefield, McCarthy has made four-of-six cuts with a T9 and two top-22 finishes mixed in.
Over his past 36 rounds in this field, he ranks third in Total Strokes Gained behind only Davis Thompson and Aaron Rai. After missing the cut at both the Scottish Open and Open Championship (two links courses), McCarthy will be thrilled to be back on American soil and playing at a course he’s had success at in the past.
Evidenced by his final round at the Valero earlier this year, we know his putter has the ability to go incendiary, and I will gladly take my chances at 70/1 this week that he does that again on the fast Bermuda greens at Sedgefield.
