Australia wasn’t wasting any time Tuesday in their quarterfinal matchup against Serbia. They came out of the gate on fire, scoring 31 points in the first quarter. They were led by Patty Mills, who scored 20 points in the first half. Still, it wasn’t enough for them to pull out the victory.
A DraftKings Sportsbook user jumped on Serbia’s live moneyline odds of +600 at one point in the second quarter. That was a good idea. Serbia mounted their comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Australia 25-11. Just when it looked like they were going to complete the job, Mills made a difficult fadeaway jumper with Nikola Jokic in his face to send the game to overtime.
Serbia didn’t let the shock of Mills’ shot derail them, eventually pulling out the 95-90 victory. Jokic produced another monster stat line, finishing with 26 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Bogdan Bogdanovic was his main support on the offensive end, scoring 17 points in the victory. He wasn’t exactly efficient, though, finishing 6-or-17 from the field.
Mills would go on to finish the game with 26 points on 11-for-21 shooting from the field. Josh Giddey also stepped up for Australia, posting 25 points, five rebounds and four assists across 33 minutes. The problem for Australia was that two of their starters didn’t score a single point and no player other than Mills or Giddey scored more than 13.
Serbia will now advance to play the winner of Tuesday’s battle between the United States and Brazil. That matchup will take place Thursday with the winner advancing to the Gold Medal Game.
