France upsets Canada in quarterfinals of Olympics

Facing off in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics on Tuesday, France upset Canada 82-73. Heading into this matchup, Canada was favorited by eight points and they were a -310 ML favorite on the DraftKings Sportsbook, while France carried +270 ML odds. France was led by Guerschon Yabusele, who finished with 22 points and five rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting. The 28-year-old is a former first-round draft pick by the Celtics in 2016, who now competes with Real Madrid. Isaia Cordinier also added 20 points — including 4-of-5 three pointers — and Evan Fournier produced 15 points, including a near half court three-pointer with under a minute left, that sealed the victory for France. Lastly, while Victor Wembanyama struggled with his shot, finishing 2-of-10 from the field for seven points, the big man grabbed 12 points and was active on the defensive end, tallying three steals and one block.

In the disappointing loss for Canada, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander did everything he could, leading the team with 27 points, five rebounds and four assists. RJ Barrett also tallied 16 points, while shooting an efficient 6-of-11 from the field, but no other players for Canada reached double-digit points. Most notably, Jamal Murray’s struggles in the Olympics continued, with the guard scoring only seven points on an abysmal 3-of-13 from the field. Furthermore, Murray only recorded one assist and he turned the ball over three times. For the Olympics, the Kentucky product will finish averaging an ugly 6.0 PPG on a brutal 29% shooting.

With this upset win, France now advances to the semifinals, where they will face Germany on Thursday. Germany defeated France in group play by 16 points and they are a 4.5-point favorite over France for the semifinals on the DraftKings Sportsbook. Also on the DraftKings Sportsbook, Germany carries the second-best odds to take home the gold medal of these Olympic Games at +750, while France sports the third-best odds at +950.
