Noah Lyles is officially the fastest man in the world. Yes, his mouth wrote a check that his body WAS able to cash, as he beat the field in an incredible photo finish on Sunday in the 100M final in Paris.
And The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz says that is exactly the kind of bravado you need in track.
Dan says Lyles is interesting because he represents “maximum American bravado: speed division,” which is filled with football wide receivers and track stars. Meaning, you better be the most confident person in the world and ready to show us you know it. Dan says you can’t have fake humility in track and Lyles is as arrogant as any we’ve ever had out on the track.
“There were a whole lot of people rooting for him to lose because that doesn’t feel like sportsmanship,” Dan says. “But, in track and field, who cares about sportsmanship?”
Dan says you can see that it means something for all of these world-class athletes to compete for their countries. It is coolest thing, Dan says, when sports are the best of us. The athletes are representing us like they deeply care about representing their flag, even a time of great division in our country and even when our country has made things hard for a lot of people. But there these athletes are, representing their country with pride and emotion. Living up to the Olympic ideal. No matter how much bravado is on display.
