Caleb. Williams. We’ve all heard the name. If you haven’t, well, listen up. The former USC quarterback and No. 1 overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft has taken the league by storm — and he hasn’t even played a game yet. From his on field, unfathomable talents, to his fresh and self-expressive personality off the field, Williams has made a name for himself while bringing life to most Bears fans’ playoff hopes.
But what makes the 6’1, Washington D.C. native so special? Imagine having a guy under center that can evade a collapsing pocket, deliver throws from insane arm angles, possess elite arm strength, and is accurate with the football. A dream, right? Caleb Williams is arguably the greatest college quarterback to enter the pros and had NFL GMs’ mouths watering at the possibility of getting him first overall.
Let’s get to the stats. With 42 touchdown passes and 4,537 passing yards his sophomore year, followed by 30 touchdowns on 68.6 completion percentage his junior year, Williams racked up an arsenal of accolades: 2022 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year, 2022 Consensus All-American, and the 2022 Heisman Memorial Trophy.
Chicago’s new quarterback is simply a phenomenon. While he received comparisons to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes with his side-arm passes and magic with the ball, Williams has stood out for more than just his on-field talent. The No. 1 pick has attracted both positive and negative attention for his outgoing personality, the way he dresses, and the fact he paints his fingernails — overall, the way he “doesn’t conform” to a typical “masculine” quarterback in the professional league. Conversations surrounding the football star’s skills and character have caused him to be a lightning rod in the league even before officially starting his professional career.
Although he’s widely considered a generational talent, Williams’ “character concerns” caused a flurry of arguments on social media and broadcast media. X/Twitter users constantly created internet memes of his outfits or his pink phone case, while broadcasts developed entire news cycles depicting whether Williams’ emotions after games showed weakness. Despite this, the young QB holds onto his identity and does not shy away from the commentary. He holds true to himself, appearing confident but humble, personable but comedic, and refuses to conform to the outside noise’s wishes.
Plain and simple, Williams has been a focal point of the league since college ball, and has sky high expectations awaiting him. Coming to an organization that is starving for elevation and has already invested a flurry of weapons for their new QB—including bringing in receivers Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen—all eyes will be on Caleb to shine right from the get-go. And by the get-go, I mean now, during training camp.
