Scheffler’s ($12,500; 134 FPTS) remarkable season continued at the Men’s Olympic Golf Competition in Paris, with the top-ranked player in the world taking home the gold medal for the USA. Despite being four shots back of the lead heading into the final round, Scheffler stormed back Sunday and shot a course record 9-under 62 at the Albatros course of Le Golf National to claim the top prize. The former Texas Longhorn started his bogey-free final round with three straight birdies and then he generated six birdies on the back nine. If including this Olympic event, Scheffler has now extraordinarily won seven times in 17 starts this season. The 28-year-old was a popular option in the $800K Gold Golfer Special contest, being rostered by 24.2% of the field. From a betting perspective, Scheffler carried +1400 odds to win the gold medal on the DraftKings Sportsbook prior to the final round at the Albatros course, and his odds to win got as long as +6000 during the course of the event.
Representing Great Britain, Tommy Fleetwood ($9,500; 122 FPTS) finished one stroke back of Scheffler for the silver medal and Hideki Matsuyama ($8,800; 119.5 FPTS) took home the bronze medal representing Japan. Fleetwood was tied with Scheffler on Sunday going into the 17th and was in a great position to force a playoff for the gold medal, but the Englishman recorded a bogey on the 17th hole and then pared the 18th, resulting in him finishing second. For the day, Fleetwood posted a 5-under 66, which included eight birdies and three bogeys.
As for Matsuyama, the Japanese professional didn’t tally a bogey Sunday and racked up six birdies, en route to a 6-under 65 at the Albatros course. This round resulted in Matsuyama finishing in third place for the bronze medal and only two shots back of the winner in Scheffler.
While Scheffler’s historical round stole the show, another huge story to come from the final round of the Men’s Golf Competition was the collapses of Jon Rahm ($10,700; 119 FPTS) and Xander Schauffele ($11,600; 93.5 FPTS), who were tied for the lead heading into the final round. Rahm opened the day with five birdies on the front and looked well on his way to gold, but epically collapsed on the back nine, with four bogeys, one triple and only two birdies. The Spaniard finished with a 1-under 70 on Sunday and notably had +210 odds to win gold on the DraftKings Sportsbook prior to the final round.
Schauffele carried even better pre-round odds to win gold than Rahm and was the favorite heading into the final round at +150 on the DraftKings Sportsbook, but was a major disappointment in his quest for his second gold medal, recording a 2-over 73 during the final round. The two-time major champ produced three birdies, three bogeys and a double Sunday, dropping him all the way down to a tie for ninth place.
