Report: Jarrett Allen agrees to extension with Cavaliers

Jarrett Allen has agreed to a three-year, $91 million extension with the Cavaliers, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Allen is coming off a strong season, during which he averaged 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. His 16.5 points per game came on 63% shooting from the field. Additionally, Allen averaged 1.1 blocks and 2.7 assists per game, with that latter being a career-high for the center.

Allen’s defensive prowess has helped the Cavaliers finished inside the top six in defensive efficiency the last three seasons. Locking up the center was a priority for Cleveland this offseason, along with Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland and Evan Mobley.

In addition to securing their top four players for the long haul, the Cavaliers made a change in leadership. Allen’s old head coach in Brooklyn, Kenny Atkinson, was brought in to run the show in Cleveland. In Golden State the last three seasons, Atkinson was regarded as one of the top assistants in the league. The Cavaliers hope to make a deep postseason run this coming season after a depleted version of their roster advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals this past spring and lost to the eventual NBA champion Celtics in five games.

Despite Mitchell, Mobley and Garland all missing extended time last season — none of these three players played over 57 games during the regular season — the Cavaliers won 48 games. Their O/U for wins this coming season is at that same number of 48.5 on DraftKings Sportsbook. At that line, attacking the over is a sharp move, with Cleveland likely to have a much better season health-wise in 2024-25.
