With less than a week to the MLB trade deadline, the Tigers find themselves in somewhat of an unenviable position. Detroit is unlikely to catch Cleveland in the American League Central, yet the Tigers are just 5.5 games back of a Wild Card spot. The team is also 12-5 in its last 17 contests entering Friday’s action. Do they buy? Do they sell? Unfortunately, that decision might’ve just become clearer due to an injury.
Greene, a first-time All-Star this season, is headed to the 10-day injured list due to a hamstring strain. Formerly the fifth-overall pick in the 2019 Draft, Greene is in the midst of a true breakout campaign for Detroit. In 101 games and 427 plate appearances, the 23-year-old has hit 17 home runs and managed career-highs in both ISO (.221) and wRC+ (136). He’s been a massive reason why the Tigers actually rank third in MLB in runs scored in the month of July (104).
Despite its recent run of success, Detroit’s odds to make the playoffs are currently +700 on the DraftKings Sportsbook. With Greene’s ill-timed ailment, it’s simply difficult to make the case that the Tigers can make a run in the AL.
