Dylan Cease ($9,200; 50.45 FPTS) made history on Thursday afternoon, becoming just the second player in Padres franchise history to throw a no-hitter — joining current teammate Joe Musgrove, who accomplished the feat in 2021. Cease struck out nine and walked three in San Diego’s 3-0 win.
Complete games are increasingly rare in modern baseball, let alone a no-hitter, so it’s interesting to note that Cease only needed 20 pitches to record the last six outs of this contest. He’d finish with 114 pitches, which is only one more than he’d thrown in a matchup with the Cubs back in early May. In fact, the bigger concern on Thursday might have been weather. This game had a rain delay of over an hour in the top of the first inning. Crucially, Cease had yet to take the mound.
On the DraftKings Sportsbook, Cease is currently +3000 to win the National League Cy Young. At the present, it seems like a pretty open race for the award, with Chris Sale as the favorite at +140. Coming into Thursday’s action, Cease ranked seventh among NL qualified pitchers in FIP (3.09). He also led all pitchers in baseball in strikeouts (159). To me, those statistics tell the story of a man who very much has an opportunity to end the season with some prestigious hardware.
