Argentina will attempt to repeat as Copa America champions when they battle Colombia in Sunday’s 2024 final. Argentina’s win in 2021 secured the first international title for Lionel Messi, who was able to add a World Cup win shortly after as well. Argentina will try to make it three titles in a row, while Colombia will look to keep its unbeaten run going. Colombia hasn’t lost an international match in more than two years, with the last setback coming to Argentina during 2022 World Cup qualification.

Both these teams have been in great form, and both have faced pressure situations in this competition. Argentina needed a penalty shootout to overcome Ecuador in the quarterfinal, while Colombia had to stave off a desperate Uruguay squad in the semifinal after playing with 10 men for the entire second half. These two sides met in the semifinal of Copa America 2021, with Argentina winning 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
Daniel Munoz’s red card against Uruguay will cost him this match, compounding Colombia’s back line issues with Jhon Lucumi having been ruled out for the tournament earlier. Argentina will have a bit of an emotional boost with Angel Di Maria saying this will be his final international match.
I see this playing out similar to the 2021 semifinal between these two sides. Unlike the previous two knockout rounds, this final would go to extra time should regulation end with a draw. Even though Colombia is in elite form, Argentina is the last team to defeat its South American counterpart. I think that happens again Sunday, and the defending champions make it two Copa America titles in a row.
