Argentina will get the opportunity to defend its 2021 championship Sunday when it takes on Colombia in the Copa America 2024 final. Argentina was able to take down Canada for a second time in the tournament Tuesday, winning the semifinal by the same 2-0 scoreline as the group stage game. Colombia was able to see out its semifinal match against Uruguay despite going down to 10 men late in the first half, and even had the chance to add some insurance goals late. Argentina and Colombia met in the semifinal round of the last Copa America, with Argentina winning 3-2 on penalties after the sides finished regulation with a 1-1 draw.

Both sides are fairly evenly matched on paper, but Argentina has been the more consistent team when it comes to scoring. Colombia is also going to be down a few defenders thanks to injuries and suspension, but will still have James Rodriguez despite his yellow card against Uruguay. I expect this to be an entertaining affair as both teams have shown a nose for goal throughout the competition.
Angel Di Maria has announced this will be his last game for Argentina, so that’s going to be an emotional boost for the defending champions. Di Maria was the one who scored the winner for Argentina in the 2021 final, securing Lionel Messi’s first international title. Maybe Messi will return the favor this time around. Even though Colombia is a great side and has been in tremendous form, it’s hard to bet against Argentina. I’d potentially take a draw in regular time but I’m still leaning towards Argentina on the moneyline there. Messi and company don’t have as much pressure as they did three years ago, but they remain as determined as ever to add a trophy to the cabinet. Pick the defending champions to repeat.
