Spain vs. France: Picks, predictions, team news for Euro 2024 semifinal

European soccer heavyweights Spain and France will meet in Tuesday’s Euro 2024 semifinal hoping to keep their impressive tournament runs going. Spain took out hosts Germany in the quarterfinal round in extra time, while France knocked out Portugal in a tense penalty shootout in the last match. These teams last faced off in the 2021 UEFA Nations League final, where France beat Spain 2-1. However, Spain holds the overall head-to-head edge in the rivalry.

Here’s what you need to know for the match, with odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook.

Spain haven’t seen a penalty shootout yet in this competition, going to extra time only once. It’s been relatively smooth sailing so far, and the round of 16 match against Georgia was essentially a cakewalk despite Spain going down 1-0 early. The tense match against Germany in the quarterfinal should help Spain, as France is going to be its best opponent yet. The French have drawn three times in this competition, and have actually scored zero goals during the run of play. Two France goals were actually own goals, while Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty as the remaining goal. It’s a true clash of styles in this match, as Spain’s high-flying attack with a penchant for finding the back of the net meets France’s superb defense.

Pedri has been ruled out for the tournament after suffering a knee injury against Germany, while Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand are both suspended. Alvaro Morata is available despite the belief he was facing suspension, as is Fabian Ruiz. For France, Adrien Rabiot is back after a one-match ban. Ferland Mendy and Marcus Thuram are reportedly dealing with minor injuries but should still be available off the bench.

I think France matches up well defensively against Spain, although that resolve will be tested if the Spanish break through early for a goal. I’ll pick a draw for regular time and I’ll actually back France to advance given this team has more experience playing under pressure.
