After a lackluster opening match against Costa Rica, Brazil found its footing against Paraguay and Colombia to look like a potential champion once again. Uruguay has looked shaky at times in attack but remains a great threat to go all the way behind comprehensive showings across the group stage. These sides last met in a World Cup qualifier match in October 2023 in Montevideo, with Uruguay winning 2-0.
Uruguay forward Maximiliano Araujo suffered a major injury against USA and had to be stretchered off the field, so his status is very much in doubt for this game. On the Brazil side, star winger Vinicius Jr. is suspended due to card accumulation. He’s going to be out for this contest.
Even with Vinicius out, Brazil has plenty of firepower to keep pace with Uruguay for 90 minutes. However, I think the lack of a key player does make a difference in penalties and I’ll back Uruguay to advance to the semifinal round.
